AMERICAN PORTRAIT PROJECT
Taos photographer, Kathleen Brennan began this project in early spring 2008 when she read an article about the peace symbol turning 50. It was created in 1958 by Gerald Holton from the semaphore letters for N and D, standing for nuclear disarmament.

Kathleen decided to recognize the importance of this symbol by making peace portraits, and soon realized that she wanted to include the US flag to highlight the increasing incongruity of US government actions and the universal goal of peace. Now that the elections are over, she expects that the project will continue to evolve in unexpected ways.
